This article describes how to integrate Blameless with your Notion account to export Blameless retrospective and incident data as Notion pages.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
Overview
Blameless integrates with Notion, enabling the export of retrospective data in Notion for purposes of document management and access control, leveraging Notion's sharing permissions.
A Notion Page is created automatically by Blameless when the incident is resolved, updated with the most recent retrospective data, linked to the retrospective, and can later on be updated on-demand with the latest data captured in your Blameless retrospective (e.g incident timeline, questionnaire in your retrospective tabs, etc).
Prerequisites
Before you start integrating Blameless with your Notion:
- Ensure you have administrator access to a Blameless account.
Setting Up Notion Integration
- Navigate to Settings → Integrations within your Blameless account.
- Locate the Notion option and select either "Manage" or "Setup".
-
Click Authorize to launch the Authorization Flow and then click Select Pages to select the Pages you would like Blameless to have access to.
NOTE: Select ALL the pages you would like to use in the Page configuration step later
Export Page Configuration
- Go to Settings -> Retrospective Preferences -> Export
-
Default Page Setup:
- In Blameless’ Notion Export settings, designate a default Page for storing all retrospectives. Clicking the Folder icon will open a popup that lets you pick a Notion Page (this list will reflect the Pages you selected during the authorization flow)
-
Custom Folder Configuration:
- For varying Incident Types, assign specific pages to organize retrospectives by category, such as Customer Incidents or Security Incidents.
- Click "Add Page" to add another page and repeat the same steps as the "Default Page"
- Select which Incident Types should be stored in a specific page by using the input field for Incident Types
Working with Notion
Upon resolving an incident, Blameless automatically creates a Notion Page and exports retrospective data to it under the pre-configured parent page.
NOTE:
- Once you enable automatic export of your Incident Retrospectives, the Analysis section will no longer appear in the Blameless Retrospective. The template you have in place will be used as a section within the exported Retrospective itself for collaboration outside of Blameless. If you wish to still answer questions in Blameless and simply export at the end of Retrospective completion, use the Retrospective Tabs.
Notion Content Refresh
To ensure that the Notion Page linked to a retrospective remains up to date with the latest data captured in the Blameless, Blameless users can manually update the Notion Page at any time before the retrospective is published.
Note that the Notion Page is updated in its entirety. If you have modified content directly in the Notion Page and would like to revert back to a previous version, you can view old versions of the Page in the trash section of Notion
Summary
By following these steps, you will have successfully configured the Notion integration in Blameless for exporting Retrospectives. You can now easily manage and organize your incident reports within Notion, tailored to your specific needs.
